A large block, in Oviedo’s new residential extension, relates its materiality and expression to the nearby Naranco mountain
This large 200-unit housing building, completed with communal spaces, indoor sports facilities, commercial areas and private gardens, fits effortlessly into the existing planning regulations for a new grid of urban blocks in the Oviedo outskirts. These city limits collide with the Naranco foothills, a natural and cultural enclave dear to the city’s memory and daily life, containing public gardens and forests, lookout standpoints and medieval relics in the form of a set of small and unique religious and royal constructions
The building borrows the black and golden tones present in the rich range of limestones that form the Naranco massif, turning them into a set of precisely composed set of prefabricated concrete panels with mineral sand, producing a dry-construction facade system. These panels are z-shaped as to be leaned directly onto the concrete slab edges, thus optimizing construction timeframes, reducing secondary steel joints, and resulting in a dense facade with a certain degree of relief, which plays with Oviedo’s misty atmosphere and shades.
Making up for their mandatory deep plans, every house has a long terrace, guaranteeing an outdoor space and contributing to the stratified, mineral nature of the building.
